The Chalet, 50 Ballyavelin Road, Edenmore, Limavady, Co Londonderry, BT49 ONQ

This building, known as The Chalet, was originally a single-story Victorian timber house constructed between 1880 and 1893. It was built by Samuel Martin Macrory of Ardmore Lodge for his wife, who suffered from ill health, with the intention of providing a healthier location than the low-lying Ardmore Lodge. The timber structure was a prefabricated kit imported from Scandinavia, consisting of two kits built back-to-back. Samuel Macrory, connected to the new Dungiven to Limavady railway (opened in 1883), arranged for the timber to be delivered by train directly to the site. The kits cost £120. The Chalet was flanked by two two-story square towers with pyramid roofs, rendered in a contrasting material. A painting belonging to the current occupants depicts the original timber building as a low-roofed structure with a decorative front arcade and projecting gables at each end, featuring three decorative columns. Sash windows were fitted with shutters. The two towers were positioned behind the main building, adjoining it. Originally powered by electricity from Ardmore Flour Mill, The Chalet remained standing until its demolition by the present occupants after they moved onto the site thirteen years ago. It is now largely gone and not suitable for listing.
