Description

This description relates to a pair of single-storey urban vernacular buildings that stood on Caddells Lane, Rathfriland. They were demolished around 1979 or 1980 and the site remains vacant. The buildings first appeared on a valuation map from 1835; they were not present on a map from 1776. In 1860, one was described as a newsroom, measuring either 7.5 yards by 7 yards with 1.75 storeys, or 6 yards by 7 yards with 1.75 storeys.

The buildings featured rendered walls with lines simulating masonry, a natural slate roof, and projecting timber porches. The porches were flanked by casement windows with glazing bars, although the glazing bars were lost from one window. Channelled pilasters rose on the porches to a frieze and cornice with dentils in the soffit. Each porch was topped with a pediment, finials, bargeboards and carved details. The buildings had a 40-foot frontage.

The buildings shared a pitched roof with overhanging eaves and scalloped bargeboards on the west gable. They had a rendered and coped chimney on the party wall and another on the west gable. Each building had a chamfered base course. The front doors were set within shallow timber porches with pitched timber board roofs, fretted wavy bargeboards, and stout timber finials. Each door was framed by a timber pilaster and had a narrow transom above, while the windows on either side were side-hung timber casements with 2x3 Georgian panes and deep painted cills. The right gable was blank, and the left gable abutted a rear outbuilding connected to 51 Downpatrick Street.
