Description
McGowan's Bridge is a Victorian-era stone bridge built between 1840 and 1859. It carries a public road over the former route of the Portadown, Dungannon and Omagh branch line of the Great Northern Railway, which opened in 1858 and closed in 1965. The bridge was likely designed by John Godwin, the railway’s engineer at the time. It is a single-arched masonry structure aligned north to south, built of snecked basalt rubble with an elliptical archway formed of shaped voussoirs. The abutments have battered faces and project slightly on either side of the archway. Parapets are returned at the southern end, and the carriageway is slightly humped with grass verges. The bridge is located in a rural setting, surrounded by fields. The former railway line has been removed and its trackbed filled with earth, obscuring the railway tracks on both sides of the bridge. On the east side, the fill covers some of the arch’s voussoirs. The bridge is considered to have industrial archaeological interest.
