Description
St John’s Roman Catholic Church, located on Eglish Road in Portadown, is an early 20th century rebuilding of an earlier church dating back to the early 19th century. The church is constructed in the Gothic Revival style, comprising a nave, chancel, and a projecting entrance porch. The main entrance faces west. The roofs are slated, with stone crosses marking the apexes of the main gables. The walls are rendered with a dry dash finish, incorporating smooth rendered dressings, quoins, and a plinth. A small plaque on the entrance gable is inscribed with the dates “Built 1826 Rebuilt 1914”.
The later gabled porch projecting on the entrance front features an elliptical archway containing a pair of timber boarded doors. The porch is flanked on each side by two Gothic arched two-light windows, and surmounted by a large Gothic arched three-light window. Similar Gothic arched windows are present on the side elevations, with three on the south side and two on the north side. A three-light Gothic window is located on the east gable. Lean-to roofed vestry and sacristy structures are attached to each side of the chancel, and a later modern projecting canopy is positioned over the doorway on the north side.
The original church, dated to 1829 according to Ordnance Survey Memoirs from 1835-8, was described as a "plain commodious building, affording standing room for 800 persons.” An entrance porch was added after 1979. The building stands in a rural setting, facing the public road and set back within its own graveyard. Modern front boundary railings and gates are in place.
