Description

This is a long, single-storey shed dating to 1946, located within a scrapyard on the north side of Obins Street in Portadown, County Armagh. The building is situated to the west side of the yard. Originally used for the reconditioning of jeeps and other vehicles, it is now used as a store.

The shed is roughly rectangular in plan, although the south elevation is slightly skewed. The front, or south, elevation is constructed of brick with a stepped parapet, rendered in-out quoins, dressings, and coping. The western side of the elevation is integrated with a short garden wall of matching brick, while the eastern side connects with a taller rendered wall. A central, flat-arched vehicle entrance is present, featuring a timber-sheeted door. The west, east, and north elevations are clad in corrugated metal, appearing to have no openings. The roof is curved and partly constructed with Belfast Trusses, also clad in corrugated metal, with some areas of missing sheeting.

The shed was built in 1946 by the present owner’s father. The Belfast truss, a roof structure developed in the mid-nineteenth century, is a key architectural feature. It was initially designed to provide efficient, lightweight, and long-span roofs to meet the demands of the industrial revolution. The term "Belfast truss" broadly describes timber bowstring trusses where internal bracing members connect to the top curved member. The design evolved from structures initially advertised by McTear & Co. in 1866 and later by Anderson & Co. beginning in 1886, with Anderson's 1896 Mk II model becoming particularly influential.
