Description

This is a three-story, two-bay house, one of seven in a terrace on the north side of Bridge Street in Portadown, County Armagh. It was constructed between 1860 and 1879, although it did not appear on the 1862 Ordnance Survey map. Architectural details suggest a late 19th-century date of construction.

The building has a pitched roof covered with artificial slate, featuring paired corbels to the overhanging timber eaves. A modern brick chimney is located at the right end of the ridge. The front wall of the building is painted brick, facing south onto Bridge Street. The front elevation is two windows wide on its upper floors. All windows are modern fixed units, set within slightly advanced painted brick architraves and have masonry cills. The ground floor has a boarded-up window to the right of a six-panelled reproduction door with a transom. The door is framed by a pair of reproduction timber consoles supporting a small timber canopy. The right (east) gable abuts the adjacent property at HB14/12/004E, and the left (west) gable abuts the adjacent property at HB14/12/004C.

The rear (north) elevation is red brick and includes a single-story return extension to the right. A 3/1 sliding sash window is at ground-floor level on the left side, with a corresponding 6/1 sash window above it on the first floor, and a 6/6 sash window above that on the second floor. A 1/1 sliding sash window is located between the ground and first floors, and another between the first and second floors, both positioned above the extension roof. A modern extension with a flat roof and rendered walls features a door and window on its left side. A lean-to shed with a corrugated metal roof is located in the rear yard, abutting a wall to an alleyway.

Historical records indicate the terrace was initially thought to have been built around 1840, but this is contradicted by its absence from the 1862 Ordnance Survey map. Original features were intended to include slated roofs, brick walls with contrasting brick dressings to windows, sash windows with horns, and panelled doors with plain transoms. Documentation from 1969 and 1978 confirms modern windows were already present.
