Description
This is one of seven houses in a terrace on the north side of Bridge Street, Portadown, built between 1860 and 1879. The Ulster Architectural Heritage Society initially suggested a construction date around 1840, but this is inconsistent with its appearance and the 1862 Ordnance Survey map.
The building is three stories high and two bays wide, with a pitched roof covered in artificial slate, featuring paired corbels to the overhanging timber eaves. A modern brick chimney is located at the right end of the ridge. The front elevation, facing south towards Bridge Street, features painted brick walls and two windows on the upper floors. All windows are horizontally divided sliding sash windows with horns, and have slightly advanced painted brick architraves and masonry cills. The ground floor has a six-panelled door at the left and a boarded-up window to its right. The door is a reproduction, with a transom and a pair of timber consoles supporting a small timber canopy. The right (east) gable abuts the adjacent property at HB14/12/004F, while the left (west) gable abuts HB14/12/004D.
The rear (north) elevation is of red brick, with a single-story return abutting the right side. The ground floor has a 3/1 sliding sash window on the left. Above this are 6/1 and 6/6 sash windows to the first and second floors respectively. Between the ground and first floors, and again between the first and second floors, are 1/1 sliding sash windows, positioned over the extension roof. A small mono-pitched extension with a natural slate roof and rendered walls projects from the rear, with a door and window on its left cheek. A lean-to shed with a corrugated metal roof is located in the rear yard, abutting the wall to the alley.
Historical records indicate the properties originally had slated roofs, brick walls with contrasting brick dressings around the windows, sash windows with horns, and panelled doors with plain transoms. Photographic surveys from 1969 and 1978 confirm the current windows are modern.
