Description
This is a former cast-iron lamp standard, originally located at the traffic island where Castle Street meets another road in Gilford, County Down. It was erected in 1907 by the inhabitants of Gilford in memory of Hugh Dunbar McMaster Esq., J.P. The First Survey card describes the original structure as having a splayed and chamfered base, slim attached columns with foliated caps and scotia-profile plinths rising to a multi-foil with a foliated and decorated cap, above which a standard rose to support a lamp. The lamp itself was described as modern and changing the monument’s appearance. The lamp standard has now been removed. The site is subject to a partial survey only and has no listed architectural or historical interest.
