Description
Sliverwood Villa is a two-storey detached suburban dwelling house built in 1905-06 in an Edwardian 'Free picturesque' style. The asymmetrical facade is finished with a mix of rendered and brickwork, and includes a veranda and a gable with decorative bargeboards. The roof is now covered with replacement asbestos tiles, and most windows have been replaced with PVC frames. A c.1970s lean-to garage extends from the south side, and a c.1950s extension is present at the rear.
The house was built just prior to 1906 for Ernest Green, a local coal merchant. It was originally named 'Silverwood' and is shown on Ordnance Survey maps from 1905-06. An advertisement from early 1920 described the house as having two reception rooms, four bedrooms, a kitchen, two pantries, a scullery, a box-room, and a WC, alongside a coal-house, shed and enclosed kitchen garden.
The property was vacant in 1928 and occupied from 1929 by James McVeigh, a spirit merchant, who died in 1939. His widow, Ellen, died around 1948, and the house was sold in 1951 for £2,700 to Mr. Owen R. Lavery, who also acquired adjacent land along Francis Street. His family later established a petrol station on part of this land. Mr. Lavery owned the property until the 1980s.
