Description
This is a two-storey terrace of four dwellings, built around the 1870s on the west side of Shore Road in Ballymacruise, near Millisle, Newtownards. The terrace is located between numbers 34 and 40.
The front facade of the terrace retains much of its original character, although the rear elevations have been significantly extended in recent times with modern PVC windows and doors. Number 34 has a modern timber panelled and glazed front door to the right of the facade, with a large window to the left. A gabled half dormer with a modern window and decorative barge boards is above the roofline. A plain timber door to the right of the entrance provides rear access via a passage. Number 36 is identical to number 34, but mirrored and without the rear access door. Number 38 is double fronted, with a central timber panelled front door flanked by PVC windows. Two evenly spaced half dormers with PVC windows are above. A large single-storey flat-roofed extension with a modern window and door dominates the rear, with two small square PVC windows to the first floor, and a further window in a flat-roofed half dormer to the left. Number 40 has a modern glazed front door on the far right side of the facade, with a three-sided bay window to the left. Two half dormers matching previous examples are above. A two-storey flat-roofed extension with modern windows and a door extends to the rear.
The facade of the terrace is finished with lined render, with chamfered quoins to number 38. The rears of the buildings are mainly in plain render. The roofs are pitched and gabled, covered in Bangor blue slates, and have five chimney stacks. Four are rendered, but the stack between numbers 34 and 38 is more recent and built of brick. Cast iron rainwater goods (rw goods) are present at the front of the houses, except for number 40, while the rear rainwater goods are PVC, except for number 38, which has a mix of cast iron and PVC. Low ‘garden’ walls are present to the front of number 38 and 40; number 38’s wall appears to be relatively new.
According to local residents, the terrace was constructed in the 1870s by Thomas Waugh, who also resided in one of the houses. Historical photographs of Shore Road dating from circa 1920 and early twentieth century photographs of Millisle’s Main Street provide visual records.
