Description

This is a single-storey, gabled house likely dating to the latter half of the eighteenth century. It is situated within a terrace on the east side of Shore Road, Millisle. The original front facade has been largely preserved, although the interior has been completely modernised, and a large, flat-roofed dormer and a flat-roofed extension have been added to the rear.

The west-facing front facade features a centrally positioned timber-sheeted stable door. To the left of the door are three modern windows with simulated Georgian panes, and a similar window is positioned to the right. A flat-roofed extension projects from the left side of the rear, incorporating modern windows and a tall, rendered chimney stack. A large, partly recessed and fully glazed entrance is located centrally on the rear, with two narrow, modern window openings to the right: one is horizontally oriented, and the other is vertical. The rear roof slope is dominated by a large, almost entirely glazed, flat-roofed dormer, which is topped by two clear, pyramid-shaped roof lights. The front roof is covered in asbestos slates, while the rear is finished in plain render. Modern PVC window frames and other features are present.

A building is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1833/4 and 1858-60, indicating the site's historical occupation. Deeds suggest construction occurred in the latter half of the eighteenth century, when Shore Road served as the main thoroughfare for Millisle. The building exhibits vernacular characteristics. Valuation records from the 1830s and 1863, along with Ordnance Survey maps and memoirs, document the site and surrounding area. The Dunleath Papers at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland may contain related leases, given the Mulholland family’s acquisition of land in the Millisle area during the 1840s. Photographs from the early twentieth century, reproduced in "Echoes of Millisle and district," offer a visual record of the area.
