The Mill House, 3 Main Street, Ballymacruise, Millisle, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 3BL

The Mill House is a large three-storey gabled house built in the 1820s, standing on the east side of Main Street in Millisle. According to the present owner, it was constructed in 1824 by David Carmichael, a locally prominent mill owner. The house takes its name from Carmichael's corn mill, which formerly stood immediately to the south and has since been demolished in the mid twentieth century. Insignificant remains of this former mill survive to the south of the property.

The front west facade features a central elliptical arched doorway with a panelled door, four-pane fanlight and sidelights with patterned glass, set within a simple surround. To the left are four windows with modern timber frames, comprising one window to the immediate left of the door, one further left, and three across the first floor, with the centre window opening slightly shorter than the others. The second floor has three squat windows fitted with modern frames. The entire facade is finished in plain render with chamfered quoins.

The north gable has a single-storey extension with a monopitched roof attached at ground floor level, featuring a castellated parapet to the front. At attic level in this gable are two small two-pane windows. The south gable similarly has two attic-level windows of comparable size, with a slightly larger but similar window to the right at first floor level.

The rear elevation features a two-storey gabled return in the centre. To the first floor of this return are two modern windows, and a large PVC conservatory occupies the ground floor. The north facade of the return contains a large modern kitchen window at first floor level on the left, with a small six-pane window to the far right and a tiny four-pane window near the eaves. The south facade of the return has a modern rear door with a gabled porch hood. The rear facade of the main house to the left of the return features a large multi-sided, multi-paned bay window at ground floor level, with a large elliptical arched window opening above it (resting on the flat roof of the bay), fitted with a modern casement frame. At second floor level to the eaves is a broad window with a modern multi-pane frame.

The main and return roofs are pitched with Bangor blue slates and stone parapets. Two rendered gable chimney stacks serve the main house, with one serving the return gable. A low rendered boundary wall fronts the property.

The building has been substantially modernised in recent times with modern window frames throughout and considerable alterations to the interior. A full renovation was carried out in the 1970s. The Ordnance Survey Memoirs of circa 1834 mention only seven two-storey houses within Millisle and make no reference to a three-storey dwelling, which is somewhat unusual given this building's purported construction date.
