1 Inishargy Road, Nunsquarter, Kircubbin, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 2RG

Two storey vernacular house of probable pre-1834 origin, situated at the junction of Inishargy and Shore Roads, roughly half a mile north of Kircubbin. The building is substantially intact and possesses considerable charm, with a quaint shop front and Georgian paned sash windows, though now finished in limestone chip render. It has the appearance of once being an inn.

The front north elevation is asymmetrical. To the right of centre is a plain timber sheeted front door with plain fanlight. To the right of the door is a single storey gabled extension attached to the main house gable, which has two sliding sash and case windows with Georgian panes. To the left of the door is a similar but slightly taller window. To the left of this is a former shop front with plain sheeted timber double doors with fanlight featuring simple geometric tracery. The shop window to the right of the door is large with Georgian panes and a panelled stall riser. The shop front is encased with simple panelled timber pilasters, sign board and cornice. A window to the left of the shop front matches those on the single storey extension. Six evenly spaced windows to the first floor are the same as those on the single storey extension. The front façade is finished in limestone chip render with smooth cement surrounds to door and windows, cement to the base, wall edges and as a first floor cill course. Exposed gables are rendered.

A small lean-to single storey kitchen extension is attached to the rear, with corrugated asbestos roof and large modern steel window to the south and a modern partly glazed door to the west. To the immediate left of the lean-to on the ground floor of the single storey section there is a window opening with modern frame. At first floor far right there is a similar modern window, with evidence of a former window opening to its left now blocked with brick. A small Georgian paned window is set at very low level on the ground floor at the far right. The rear and gables are finished in unpainted rough cast, some of which has fallen away. The gabled roof is covered in artificial slate. Four evenly spaced rendered chimney stacks rise through. Cast iron gutters and downspouts complete the exterior.

A building is shown on this site on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834, much the same as today. The house may be assumed to date to the early nineteenth century at least, though the irregular arrangement of the façade suggests it may once have been partly single storey. The shop section formerly housed a spirit grocers, ceasing trade no later than the early twentieth century. A single storey extension formerly attached to the east gable, noted in the original survey of February 1971, has since been demolished.
