Description

Ballyhenry House is a large, plain two-storey gabled farm house set on the west side of Ballyhenry Road, less than half a mile north of Comber, with its gable facing the roadside. The building likely originated before 1834, probably beginning life as single storey in part at least, though it appears to have assumed its present form in the latter half of the nineteenth century, possibly around 1868.

The south-facing front facade features a right-of-centre gabled porch with a timber panelled door and an 'Ards' doorway. To the left of the porch door are paired windows, now fitted with PVC frames as are all windows throughout the building. A lean-to conservatory adjoins the left side, beyond which is a single-storey gabled section with a small window and modern glazed door. To the right of the porch are another set of paired windows. The first floor of the front facade has four irregularly spaced windows. The east gable has a centrally-positioned window to the first floor, whilst the exposed section of the west gable is blank. The west gable of the single-storey section has PVC French doors. The rear of the main house has three ground-floor windows and one to the rear of the single-storey section, with four windows to the first floor; rear window openings vary in size and shape, some appearing modern, all with narrow smooth render surrounds. The entire facade is finished in rough cast and painted.

The roof is covered with Bangor blue slates and is topped by three irregularly spaced yellow brick chimneys, now discoloured. The single-storey section also has Bangor blue slates and a small rendered chimney stack to its gable, with a Velux window to the rear roof slope. PVC rainwater goods are fitted throughout.

The interior has been completely renovated in recent times, though some original detailing survives. The porch and conservatory are recent additions dating from sometime after 1973.

Outbuildings stand to the west and south. The large outbuilding to the west bears a stone panel inscribed "Built by Wm. Murdoch 1 May 1868 A.D."

A building is recorded on this site on the Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1858-60. The arrangement of windows and chimney stacks indicates the house began as single storey in part. The presence of the 'Ards' doorway and paired windows suggest the building acquired its present form in the latter half of the nineteenth century, possibly coinciding with the construction of the western outbuilding in 1868. The valuation records of circa 1835 list a building on this site as under rateable value. The original 'Ballyhenry House' was a different building located a short distance to the south.
