Description

A tall brick chimney, likely dating from around 1890, stands on a slope off a lane south of Unicarval Road, approximately one mile north of Comber. This chimney was originally part of a flax mill that has since been demolished. The octagonal chimney is constructed of brick and measures roughly 1.8 metres in diameter and 18.5 metres in height. It has a stone coping at the top, and a small arched opening near the base, with some bricks having fallen away. Very little remains of the former flax mill to the immediate east of the chimney, except for a few sections of low, overgrown rubble walling. To the northeast are the mainly timber remains of what appears to have been a grain silo.

An Ordnance Survey map from 1833/4 and 1858-60 shows a flax mill on this site, but the chimney likely dates from the later 19th century, possibly around 1890. The land of Unicarval belonged to the Cumming family from 1673 to 1849. It was then sold to George Allen, who owned the flax mill at least until the later 1860s. Records indicate that the mill was then only operated for four months of the year. The chimney is now recorded as derelict and is of industrial archaeological interest.
