Kennel Bridge, Castle Plumb, Mount Alexander, Comber, Co Down, BT23

The site represents a former stone bridge, likely built between 1820 and 1834, that crossed the Enler River just north of Comber, near the site of the ruin of Mount Alexander House. The bridge was demolished around 1994-95 and replaced with a new structure of a different design. The original bridge, as depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1858-60, comprised a long, narrow roadway bridged by two elliptical arches over the river and three smaller, segmental and elliptic arches providing access to the fields on either side. Its construction used sandstone and basalt rubble, with rough rock-faced coping along the parapets; the arches included some roughly dressed voussoirs. Wide buttresses were present on both the east and west sides, the western ones being particularly heavy and made of concrete. The new bridge has a single arch over the river and three 'accommodation' arches leading to the fields, and may have incorporated some of the sandstone from the original bridge as facing material. The site retains industrial archaeological interest.
