Site of former 63 Castle Street, Comber, Co. Down

Site of former single storey house on the north side of Castle Street, north-west of Comber town centre. The building probably dated from before 1834. When surveyed in December 1975, it was described as a single storey house with attic, slate roof, left-hand (west) gable end, and brick chimneys. The walls were rendered, lined and painted white. The front elevation featured five recent top-hung windows with square panes and a recent sheeted door positioned between the fourth and fifth windows. The building was in fair condition with a frontage of approximately 30 feet. The house was demolished some time after 1975, probably to make way for the widening of Castle Lane.

The site is shown as occupied on the 1722 map of Comber and on all subsequent available maps. The 1834 valuation records indicate that the building on the site at that time was below rateable value, so no detailed property information was recorded. This suggests the house was of pre-1834 origin, though the exact date of construction cannot be precisely determined. Castle Street was formerly known as Mill Street during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Nothing remains of the house today, and the site is now occupied by the widened road and footpath of Castle Lane.
