Description

Fairly large two-storey terrace house, possibly dating from the early 19th century (circa 1800–1820), located near the north-east end of the north-west side of High Street in Comber. The property may have origins predating 1834.

The front (south-east) façade is finished in painted lined render with a tall panelled pilaster to the right-hand edge, though much is now obscured by thick ivy growth. The ground floor features a panelled door with semicircular fanlight to the right, framed with fluted pilasters and an archivolt with keystone. To the left of the door are two windows, now with PVC frames. A large elliptical carriage entrance with dressed surrounds and timber-sheeted double doors is positioned to the left. The first floor has four unevenly spaced windows, similar in character to those on the ground floor. The exposed north-east gable, which faces into a neighbouring yard with outbuildings, is finished in lined render. The gabled roof is covered in natural slate with three fairly tall rendered chimney stacks. Solar panels are mounted to the front of the roof. The building has cast iron and PVC rainwater goods throughout.

The rear is now dominated by a large modern flat-roofed extension, built in two parts with sections at both two-storey and single-storey height. Behind the extension, the rear façade of the main house retains the carriage entrance, which has a flat arch at this side with a lowered ceiling level. A window sits directly above the arch, and a squat modern window is positioned to the left, close to the eaves. The rear façade is finished in plain painted render.

Throughout the property, window frames have been replaced with PVC. The 1834 valuation returns record a house of the same dimensions as the original portion of the present building, then in the hands of William McRoberts, which also included a 'gate' with a room above (referring to the carriage entrance). By 1861 the property was owned by Mary Jane McRoberts, presumably a relative of William. The site is documented as occupied on the 1722 map and on all subsequently available maps. Historical Street records indicate that High Street was formerly known as Cow Lane in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

A Second World War brick-built air raid shelter is located in the garden at the rear of the property.
