Description
This is a small, two-storey terrace house, likely dating from around 1880. Its unusual appearance, including small dimensions and seemingly decorative mouldings on the front facade, suggests it may have originally been part of a larger property or was added later to fill a gap in the terrace.
The house is situated on the western side of Railway Street, near its northern end. The front (east) facade features a panelled front door on the left, and a window with modern frames to the right, both set beneath a segmental arch. Matching windows are located on the first floor. The facade is rendered and painted, and has an unusual moulded band above both the ground and first floor windows. A large, two-storey extension with a mono-pitched roof and modern windows and a door projects from the rear to the left. Two small, square windows are located on the rear facade above this extension. The rear elevation is finished in plain, unpainted render. The roof is covered with asbestos slates to the front and Bangor blue slates to the rear. A rendered chimney stack is present, as is a Velux window to the front. The building includes PVC rainwater goods and an unusual wall described as a "balustrade" to the front.
Railway Street was developed following the arrival of the Belfast and County Down Railway in 1850. While the northern section of the street appeared by 1858, construction of buildings did not begin until after 1870, and was largely complete by 1901.
