Description

This is a two-storey, dwelling house-like Masonic Hall, built around 1870 and located in the middle of a terrace on the west side of Railway Street in Comber. It was likely originally free-standing. The front façade is symmetrical and features a panelled front door with a semicircular fanlight above. Above the door is a semicircular label moulding with a keystone and decorative stops. Raised and painted letters spelling "MASONIC HALL 1870", along with Masonic symbols, are positioned between the label moulding and the fanlight; the keystone includes the lodge number. Flanking the doorway are windows with modern PVC frames, each with a label moulding above featuring similar stops. The first floor has three similar windows, but with moulded surrounds and no labels. A cill course runs along the base of the upper-floor windows. The façade is finished in painted lined render. Decorative vents are located near the eaves. Cast iron rainwater goods are present on the front elevation, and two rendered chimney stacks rise from the roof. A low rendered wall with decorative wrought iron railings (likely dating to the early to mid-20th century) runs along the front.

The building has a significant two-storey return to the rear, which features at least two modern first-floor windows to the south side; these window openings appear to have been reduced recently. The rear elevation is finished in plain, unpainted render. The roof is covered in Bangor blue slates to the front, with lichen growth on the rear slates, suggesting the possibility of asbestos.

Railway Street was developed following the arrival of the Belfast and County Down Railway line in 1850; the northern half of the street appeared by 1858, though no buildings were yet present. The inscription above the doorway suggests the hall was purpose-built as a Masonic Lodge in 1870, making it potentially the oldest structure on the street. It is believed the hall was recently renovated, particularly internally.
