Description

This is a two-storey terrace house built around 1880, located on the west side of Railway Street, near the northern end. The front (east) facade features a panelled front door with a spoked fanlight, positioned to the right, and a window with a modern frame to the left. Two similar windows are present on the first floor, with a band running along the window sills. The lower half of the facade is finished with lined render, while the upper half is plain, and the entire facade is painted.

A large, two-storey lean-to extension is situated to the left at the rear, incorporating a modern window on both the ground and first floors. A smaller, single-storey lean-to, with a glazed door and sidelight, adjoins the larger lean-to on the right. A window, mirroring the front facade, is positioned above the single-storey lean-to on the rear facade’s first floor. The rear of the building is finished with unpainted plain render.

The roof is covered with asbestos-free slates and features a recently rebuilt red brick chimney stack. Two Velux roof windows are also present at the rear, using PVC materials. A low rendered wall with railings runs along the front. The house has been recently gutted and completely renovated, including the replacement of window frames and the installation of Velux roof lights.

Railway Street was laid out following the arrival of the Belfast and County Down Railway line in 1850. Most of the terrace construction, including this house, occurred after 1870 and was completed by 1901. It's possible that the house to the south was once part of a larger property.
