Description

Lough Moronay is a large two storey gabled former farm house situated on a slight rise at the end of a long lane south of the Old Belfast Road, approximately 1.5 miles west of Newtownards. The building is of pre-1834 origin, probably of eighteenth century date, and originally began life as a one and a half storey dwelling before its roof was raised at some point, possibly in the mid-nineteenth century, and large extensions were added to the rear during the twentieth century.

The front north-east facade features a left of centre 'Ards' doorway with panelled pilasters, panelled and glazed door and semicircular spoked fanlight. To the left of the doorway are paired sash windows, with a single sash window to the right and paired sash windows to the far right. The first floor has four unevenly spaced sash windows. The south-east gable has a glazed door to the left on the ground floor, whilst the north-west gable is blank. The entire facade is finished in roughcast with plain quoins and chamfered base.

The rear is dominated by an extremely large return which has been extended on various occasions in fairly recent times. The south-east facade of the return has a hipped roof projection to the left with large modern windows to the ground and first floors, with two modern windows to the first floor and one to the ground floor to the left of the projection. The north-west facade of the return has been extended recently and now slopes down to become single storey, featuring a projecting gabled porch with semicircular headed doorway to the right of centre, with sash windows positioned variously around the facade. To the rear of the main house are additional sash windows and a small single pane window.

The main house has a hipped roof with slight overhang, whilst the return roof is hipped and slopes down to a single storey section to the north-west. All roofs are covered in Bangor blue slates. Four rendered chimney stacks serve the main house, with two yellow brick stacks to the return. The building is fitted with PVC rainwater goods and two large Velux windows to the north-west side of the return roof.

Valuation records of circa 1833 indicate that the dwelling house on this site belonged to William Creighton, whose name also appears as a landowner in Greengraves on a map dating from 1803. A building is shown on this site on the Ordnance Survey maps of 1833–34 and 1858–60. The main section of the building, judging from the 'Ards' door surround and the Georgian-paned sash windows that remained until fairly recently, likely took its present form circa 1850–60. The return was probably added in the early twentieth century. The house was recently renovated. The present owner has stated that the roof of the house was raised at some point and that he had been informed that the building was originally entered on what is now the rear.
