Description

This is a late Victorian cemetery lodge, likely dating from between 1860 and 1879, situated at the entrance to Comber cemetery on the southern side of the Newtownards Road, east of Comber town centre. The building served as the caretaker's dwelling house.

The two-story house has a symmetrical front (east) facade. The central ground floor features a timber panelled door, flanked by plain pilasters, decorative brackets, and a cornice. A sash window with a simple surround is located to the left of the doorway, with an identical window to the right. Above, three evenly spaced, semicircular headed window openings with sash frames are set within gabled dormers featuring simple bargeboards with ties. The south gable has two sash windows to the first floor, and a single window to the left on the ground floor. This gable connects with the south facade of a single-story gabled return. The north gable has two first-floor sash windows. The rear facade of the main house has a sash window to the left on the ground floor, and a smaller window to the right of centre on the first floor. A single-story gabled return extends to the right at the rear, with a sheeted door and a modern window to the north facade. The gable of this return has a large modern kitchen window. The rear yard is enclosed by a high rendered wall. The building is finished with lined render and painted. The gabled roof is covered with Bangor blue slates and features two yellow brick chimney stacks. There is an overhang to the roof, with boxed eaves and exposed rafter tails. The windows are a mix of original sash windows and recent replacements, and the rainwater goods are PVC.

A kitchen extension was added around the 1970s, and at that time the gutter course located below the first-floor front windows was removed.
