Description
This is a disused railway bridge dating to approximately 1848-50, built to carry the Belfast & County Down Railway line between Newtownards and Comber. The bridge crosses the Comber River, located a short distance east of Killinchy Street and to the southeast of Comber town centre.
The bridge is predominantly constructed of rough-faced Scrabo sandstone, featuring a large semicircular arch. Both sides of the bridge are now largely hidden by thick creeping plant growth. The bridge appears to have battered piers on each side of the arch, with dressed sandstone voussoirs forming the arch itself. The intrados (the inner curve of the arch) is in dressed sandstone, but the lower portion, between a springing band and the base, is constructed in rock-faced basalt. The railway track has been removed and the ground overgrown. The original parapet is missing and has been replaced on the south side by concrete posts with wire between them.
The bridge was built around 1848-50 as part of the Belfast & County Down Railway, which opened in 1850. The railway line was closed in 1953. The bridge is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest and is currently in a derelict condition.
