Description

A small two-storey terrace house on the west side of Killinchy Street in Comber, which began life as a single-storey dwelling before being raised in height, probably around 1830–40.

The front (east) façade features a ground floor doorway positioned to the left, with a timber-sheeted door encased in plain pilasters, entablature and cornice. To the left of the doorway is a window now fitted with a PVC frame. The first floor has two similar windows. The lower half of the façade is constructed in greywacke rubble stone, while the upper half is finished in Scrabo sandstone—a distinction which indicates the building's original single-storey form and subsequent heightening.

The gabled roof is covered in natural slate with a red brick chimney stack to the north. Cast iron rainwater goods serve the front, with PVC goods to the rear.

A large modern full-height return has been added to the rear (west), featuring a mono-pitched roof, modern windows and doors, and a PVC conservatory. The narrow exposed section of the original rear façade (to the north of the return) contains PVC windows to both ground and first floors, finished in rough cast.

Historical records show that Killinchy Street was a narrow country lane without buildings in 1722. Development had begun by 1834, when this site was occupied. The use of greywacke rubble for the lower storey—a material largely abandoned for house building in Comber after around 1830—suggests the original structure predates that period. The upper storey, constructed in Scrabo sandstone and featuring the styled door surround, indicates the building was probably raised in height around 1840. The modern return may have replaced an earlier single-storey extension.
