Description

23 Killinchy Street is a substantial two-storey terrace house on the western side of Killinchy Street in Comber. It began life as a single-storey dwelling or dwellings, probably around 1800, before being raised in height around 1835–40.

The front eastern façade features a centrally positioned doorway to the left on the ground floor, with a modern panelled and glazed door set in a painted stone surround. To the left of the doorway are two sash windows with Georgian panes (eight over eight to the far left, six over six to the left). To the right of the doorway are two similar sash windows (eight over eight to the right, six over six to the far right). To the right of these windows is a large elliptical arched carriage entrance with timber-sheeted double doors, above which is a traditional-looking projecting sign. The first floor contains six sash windows with six-over-six panes, evenly spaced across the façade. The stonework consists of greywacke rubble to the lower level and Scrabo sandstone to the upper level, matching the adjoining Nos. 25 and 27. The front façade is currently covered in ivy growth.

The rear of the building has windows with PVC frames. Immediately to the right of the carriage arch is a ground floor window, followed by a small lean-to section with a window on its western face. Beyond this, the main façade projects. The projecting section has two windows on the ground floor, with the rightmost window somewhat enlarged. To the right of this is a modern-looking single-storey gabled kitchen extension, which links to a large two-storey former outbuilding, now modernised, extended, and used as a craft studio. The first floor of the projecting section has two windows, with a further two on the recessed portion of the façade to the left (north). The rear façade is mainly unrendered except for a small section immediately to the right of the carriage arch. The far right is covered in ivy growth.

The roof is gabled with natural slate to the front and asbestos to the rear. Two small cast iron skylights are positioned to the rear of the roof. Two small concrete brick chimney stacks are present. The rainwater goods are a mixture of PVC and cast iron.

Historical evidence indicates that Killinchy Street was a narrow country lane with no buildings in 1722. By 1834, development had begun at this site. The use of greywacke rubble for the original lower storey suggests the dwelling may date to around 1800, as this material had largely ceased to be used in house building in Comber after circa 1830. The building may have been among the 'new stone houses of 1 storey…lately built on the roads to Belfast and Downpatrick' referred to in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of 1837. The addition of the upper storey in Scrabo sandstone, judging from the material used and the style of the door surround, is estimated to have occurred around 1840.
