Description
A two-storey terrace house of approximately 1840–50, now converted to a store, standing on the west side of Killinchy Street in Comber. The building may incorporate the fabric of an earlier single-storey dwelling that was heightened, as evidenced by differing stone types visible on neighbouring properties within the terrace.
The front (east) façade is finished in painted lined render with chamfered in/out quoins and a chamfered plinth. The ground floor contains a doorway to the left with a panelled door and plain fanlight set within a painted stone surround with cornice. To the right is a sash window with horizontal glazing bars (2 over 2). The first floor has two similar sash windows. The exposed north gable is blank and also finished in painted lined render. The main roof is gabled and covered in natural slate, with a tall rendered chimney stack to the north gable. Rainwater goods are PVC.
The rear façade is now entirely obscured by a large modern lean-to extension fitted with numerous Velux windows to its roof. When surveyed in 1970 the property remained a domestic dwelling. It was converted to a restaurant in approximately 1990, though it is currently used as a store by its present owner.
Killinchy Street was shown as a narrow country lane without buildings on the 1722 map of Comber. By 1834 some development had occurred on this site, though most houses in the terrace were not valued during the 1833 valuation survey, leaving little recorded information about them. The differing stone types on the facades of other properties in the stretch to No. 27 indicate they all began as single-storey dwellings, suggesting this house may have undergone a similar transformation to acquire its present appearance around 1840–50, though the render obscures definitive evidence.
