Description
A small two-storey terrace house located on the west side of Killinchy Street in Comber. The building began life as a single-storey dwelling and was raised in height, probably around 1830-1840.
The front (east-facing) façade displays clear evidence of this development. The lower storey is constructed in greywacke rubble, while the upper storey is built in Scrabo sandstone. The ground floor contains a doorway to the right with a panelled door and plain fanlight, both encased in plain render. To the left is a window with a modern upper opener frame. The first floor has two similar windows. The gabled roof is covered in natural slate with a Velux window to the rear. Red brick chimney stack to the south and a small rendered stack to the north. Cast iron rainwater goods serve the front with PVC to the rear.
A large modern full-height gabled return extends to the rear, featuring modern windows, doors and a rear balcony. The entire property was completely renovated in 1998, when the return appears to have been extended. The windows throughout are modern timber frames.
The house's history reflects Comber's development. Killinchy Street appears as a narrow country lane without buildings on the 1722 map of Comber. By 1834 some development had occurred and this site was occupied. The use of greywacke rubble for the lower storey, a material that had largely ceased to be used in house building in Comber after around 1830, suggests the original single-storey dwelling predates that period. The upper storey, constructed in sandstone with a door surround style typical of the 1840s, indicates the building was raised in height around 1840. The property may have been one of the new stone houses mentioned in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of 1837.
