Description
This is a two-storey, semi-detached block of two houses, built around 1906 and subsequently modernised. It is situated on the east side of Ballywalter Road, at the southern edge of Millisle, County Down. The building has an unusually shaped, gabled form with a central bay projecting forward and the end bays set back.
The front elevation has three bays. The setback bay to the south features a modern glazed entrance door to No. 34, accompanied by a large, lean-to-like open porch that encompasses the entire ground floor of the bay’s facade. To the right of this is a modern timber window on both the ground and first floors. The setback bay to the north now has a large modern lean-to porch with a modern glazed door for No. 32 and PVC windows. Above this porch is a small, roundel window on the first floor. The central bay, divided between No. 32 and No. 34, includes a lean-to bay with PVC windows to the ground floor, and a recently enlarged window with a PVC frame to the first floor. The gables of the north and south bays are asymmetrical, with three PVC windows to the first floor and two timber windows to the left on the ground floor of the north gable, mirrored by timber windows on the south gable.
The rear elevation is the reverse of the front: the central bay is recessed, while the end bays project. The rear of the north bay (No. 32) has two PVC windows to the right on the first floor and an enlarged window with a PVC frame to the left on the ground floor, along with a PVC door to the right. The rear of the south bay (No. 34) has a similar arrangement, mirrored, with timber windows and a small, flat-roofed extension housing the rear door. The recessed central bay features a PVC window to the left (No. 32) and a modern timber window to the right (No. 34). The entire facade is finished in rough cast render with a plain rendered recessed base. The pitched roof is covered with asbestos-free slates, with a central, shared rendered chimney stack and clay “saw tooth” ridge tiles to the roof of No. 32. Two Velux windows are present on the rear slope; PVC rainwater goods are also visible.
According to the owner of No. 32, the block was built in 1906 for a Mr. Lavery. The porches are recent additions, installed during the recent modernisation of the properties.
