Old Windmill, Kirkistown Golf Course, Main Road, Kirkistown, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 1J?

The ruin of a windmill, likely dating to the late 17th century, stands near the 2nd hole of Kirkistown Golf Course. Originally built as a windmill, it later served as a navigational landmark visible from the sea.

The structure is a roughly circular stump, approximately 6.5 metres high and 5 metres in diameter. The walls are approximately 1 metre thick, and some of the stonework appears to have been repaired recently. A small arched doorway is present on the north side, with a possible matching doorway previously on the south side; small rectangular openings are situated above each. An unusual, shallow relieving arch at ground level within the wall’s interior is present, believed by Dr. Fred Hamond to have originally been a door, although the surrounding ground level has since been raised.

It is hypothesized that this windmill was constructed by James McGill, owner of Kirkistown Castle, and referenced in William Montgomery's 1683 "History of the Ards" as a visible landmark from the sea. The windmill is depicted on James Williamson’s map of 1810 and the Ordnance Survey map of 1834, but is not mentioned in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs or Townland Valuation records, suggesting it was out of use by the 1830s. It is currently recorded as derelict and of industrial archaeological interest.
