Description

The Old Corn Mill is a ruined stump of a former windmill, currently being converted into a dwelling. The remains represent a four-storey windmill, approximately 6 metres in diameter, with a flat roof at the top of the surviving structure. Former window openings have been enlarged or blocked, and modern windows installed, while the walls are mostly rendered. A plain, timber-sheeted door is located at ground level. Rubble remains of a former lean-to structure at the base, which once housed an engine; this structure's curved wall follows the curve of the windmill itself. The windmill is situated off a small lane in the village of Cloghy.

The windmill was likely built between 1780 and 1799, possibly in the 1790s, and served as an auxiliary to the nearby Cloghy water mill. Originally, it contained three stones and was surrounded by grain and meal stores. In the later 19th century, Mr. Miller, the mill’s owner, installed a steam engine. The mill operated until October 1925, when it was severely damaged by fire. It was purchased in the 1970s, and a member of the current owners’ family is now attempting to convert it into a residential property. Records related to the windmill are found in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) and include James Williamson’s ‘Maps of the County of Down’ (1810), Ordnance Survey Maps (1st Edition, 1834, 1st revision, 1860), Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland (1991), and valuation records (c.1863). Published sources include E.R.R. Green's 'The Industrial Archaeology of County Down' (1963) and Dr. F. Duff’s ‘Windmills around Portaferry and District’ (1977). The remains of the windmill possess industrial archaeological interest.
