Description
This is a short, two-storey, late Victorian terrace of four houses built around 1880-1890 in Donaghadee, County Down. The terrace is located on the southeastern side of Killaughey Road, south of the town centre. Originally, the houses presented a unified appearance, but this has been disrupted by later alterations to the facades, particularly at number 42, which now features artificial stone cladding considered unsuitable.
Generally, each house has a doorway with a fanlight, plain pilasters, and an architrave. To the left of the doorway is a window, and on the first floor are two windows set within small, gabled half dormers with decorative barge boards. The rear elevations are primarily two-storey gabled, with the exception of number 38, which has a single-storey return. All roofs are gabled and covered with Bangor blue slates with rendered chimney stacks. Steps lead to the front door of each house, and a low rendered wall encloses a small front garden. Modern windows are present in all houses except number 40, which retains original sash windows to the front.
House number 36 is similar to the others but has a slightly larger front facade with a timber-sheeted doorway entry on the left. Number 38 features a large fanlight above the entrance, semicircular arch-headed windows in the half dormers, a surround to the ground-floor window, and a single-storey extension to the rear. Number 40 has sash windows to the front and a decorative keystone above the doorway. Number 42 has the most significant alterations, with its artificial stone cladding and large front facade featuring a timber-sheeted doorway entry similar to number 36.
While buildings are depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1858-60, this terrace is demonstrably later in date and likely constructed in the 1880s or 1890s. The terrace sits within a conservation area.
