Description
A group of two long matching Edwardian terraces comprising fourteen three-storey houses, built around 1905-1910. The terraces are located on the west side of Millisle Road to the south of Donaghadee town centre, near the coast.
The northern terrace begins with No. 105 at its north end. The east-facing front facade consists of a two-storey canted bay with a flat roof on the right side. To the left on the ground floor is the entrance with a panelled door and plain fanlight, framed by plain pilasters and architrave. Above this is a first-floor window, and at the top storey sits a gabled half-dormer with decorative barge boards. The first and ground floor windows rest on a cill course. The facade is finished in limestone chip dry dash. The gable ends are blank. Behind is a large two-storey gabled return, of which half belongs to No. 107. The rear facade and return contain an assortment of window openings of different shapes and sizes. The roof is gabled with Bangor blue slates. Cast iron ogee gutters run to the front, with a mixture of PVC and cast iron rainwater goods. The chimney stack is rendered. Nos. 107 and 111 are handed versions of this design. No. 113 retains original paired windows to the gabled half-dormer and features a Tyrolean finish. No. 115 is handed with painted rough cast render.
The southern terrace begins with No. 117 at its north end, which follows the earlier design but with segmental arch heads applied to all windows on the ground and first floors and to the fanlight above the entrance. The facade has plain render. No. 119 is a handed version with original paired windows to the half-dormer. Nos. 121, 123, 125, 127, 129, and 131 follow similar patterns, with many retaining original paired windows to their half-dormers. No. 127 features dry dash render, and No. 131 is handed. A single-storey extension extends to the south gable, with unpainted facade.
The rear elevations of each property are virtually identical, with minor variations resulting from individual renovation schemes, including additional ground-floor windows to some returns, glazed roofs to yards, and half-dormers added to some second-floor windows.
Until relatively recently, many houses fell into disrepair, but almost all have now been renovated and are in good condition. All properties have experienced modern renovations including modern window frames throughout, extensive changes to returns to accommodate modern kitchens on the ground floor and modern bathrooms on the first floor.
