Railway overbridge (to The Commons), (off Millisle Road), Donaghadee, Co Down

This is an unusually substantial pedestrian overbridge, likely constructed between 1840 and 1859. It spans what was formerly a railway line, to the east of Millisle Road, providing access from a lane behind houses to The Commons. The bridge is built of random rubble, with sandstone dressings to the elliptical arch, and a chamfered coping to the parapets. A sandstone course runs along each side, above the arch, and the voussoirs are rock faced. A brick intrados is present. Concrete posts have been incorporated into the parapets, with wire fencing between them. The bridge has a slight hog back profile, and the walkway is now tarmaced; sections of the sides are now overgrown with greenery.

The bridge was probably constructed around 1859-60, coinciding with the opening of the Donaghadee Branch of the Belfast and Co. Down Railway in 1861. Although the railway line closed in 1950, the cuttings remain, and the bridge continues to serve as a pedestrian link. The structure holds industrial archaeological interest and is notable for its style, proportion, plan form, and structural system. Alterations detract from the original character of the building, and its setting is of importance.
