Description

Manor Lodge was a two-storey Georgian house with a hipped roof, dating to approximately 1780–1800, situated at 2 Manor Street in Donaghadee. It was formerly attached to the neighbouring Manor House and has now been largely demolished.

The building appears to have been constructed as a dower house, possibly for the wife of Daniel De la Cherois, who rebuilt the Manor House in the 1770s. Dating evidence is complex: a map drawn between circa 1771 and 1790 (probably around 1780) shows a building matching the original plan of Manor Lodge, though the Archaeological Survey of County Down dates it to circa 1820. Since Daniel De la Cherois died in 1790, any dower house would necessarily have been built during or after that date.

The building consisted of a main two-storey block with a single-storey entrance wing. The front facade featured a Doric columned entrance porch. In later years, from at least 1950 onwards, the building housed a technical school and subsequently served as a youth club when first surveyed in 1973.

By 1998, the structure had fallen into dangerous disrepair and was demolished in April or May of that year. Only the badly dilapidated front facade, now lacking its Doric porch, remains standing. At the time of demolition, it was stated that the front facade would be restored and incorporated into a new sympathetically designed building.

The property lies within a conservation area. Access to detailed historical documentation has been hampered by the fact that most De la Cherois estate papers remain in private hands and were not available for consultation during the survey.
