Description

6 Millisle Road, Donaghadee

A plain two-storey gabled terrace house of possible 18th century origin, located at the north end of Millisle Road just south of Donaghadee centre. The building has been substantially renovated in recent decades, which has obscured evidence of its original construction. It is attached to the north by Prospect House, a larger and grander dwelling dating to the mid-1700s, and is positioned to the west of Rosebank House, an even more substantial building probably constructed in the late 17th century.

The south-west front facade is symmetrical. At its centre is a modern panelled and glazed door with a circa 1950s style surround featuring broad fluted pilasters and a projecting flat concrete hood. To either side on the ground floor are large square windows with PVC frames and simple surrounds. The first floor contains three smaller windows with matching PVC frames and surrounds. The south-east gable is blank, with a flat-roofed garage attached to its ground floor. The rear elevation displays numerous PVC windows of various sizes, many of whose openings have been enlarged in recent times. At the far right of the ground floor is a single-storey kitchen extension with a mono-pitched roof, PVC door, and window to its south-east facade. The entire facade is finished in rough cast. The gabled roof is covered in asbestos slates with no chimney stacks. Cast iron and PVC rainwater goods are present.

Historical records suggest a house has occupied this site since at least 1700. A map dating to circa 1780 indicates the building may have been smaller than its present form, though this cannot be stated with certainty. The 1834 and 1858 Ordnance Survey maps show a house plan matching the present structure. Valuation records from circa 1836 indicate the house was then occupied by Captain Leslie, who also occupied nearby Rosebank House. The current owner believes the building may once have functioned as a gate lodge for Rosebank House. The substantial renovations undertaken in the 1950s and again in recent times have largely obscured architectural evidence of the building's age.
