Description
Donaghadee Masonic Lodge is a small single-storey Masonic hall built in 1898-99 to designs by the architectural firm J.J. Phillips and Son. Constructed in red brick and sandstone with gothic revival detailing, it remains largely intact and well maintained, representing a good example of a hall from this period.
The building is L-shaped in plan, comprising a gabled hall section with a smaller gabled projection to the north. It is situated on the west side of Millisle Road at its intersection with Killaughey Road.
The entrance is located in the centre of the north-facing gable of the projection and consists of panelled double doors set within a Tudor arch with fanlight, reached via a raised stone platform with two steps. To the left of this is a small sliding sash window with shaped sandstone lintel, set on a continuous cill course that runs around the entire building. Above is a sandstone band with a small slit opening. The gable is buttressed with a chamfered base, as is the rest of the building.
The east facade of the projection contains two small paired sliding sash windows with similar details. The rear west facade comprises the west side of the projection, which has two sliding sash windows, and the blank west gable of the hall. The south facade of the hall features four pointed arch windows with stained glass separated by buttresses. The east gable of the hall displays two outer pointed arch windows with cusped frames and stained glass. Between these is a large pointed arch recess with sandstone infill containing an inscribed panel at its base, two cusped window-like panels above, and a large trefoil with stained glass in the arch head. Above the outer windows and central panel runs a continuous line of label moulding. Sandstone bands frame either side of the central recess, with another band high in the gable. The short north facade of the hall has two pointed arch windows matching those on the south facade, separated by a buttress.
Both the hall and projection have asbestos slated gabled roofs with decorative red clay ridge tiles. A small ogee-domed lead and timber cupola crowns the main hall roof. Both the east gable of the hall and the projection gable feature sandstone parapets. Cast iron ogee gutters and downspouts complete the external detailing.
The building is enclosed by a low rendered wall with wrought iron railing and gates to the north and east, which are included in the listing.
The building appears to be largely intact both inside and out. It was re-roofed in recent times, during which the chimney may have been removed. The hall is located within a conservation area and remains in use as a hall.
