Description

A two-storey terrace building at the northern end of Main Street, Kircubbin, now operating as a public house with restaurant and apartments above. The building is dated to approximately the mid to latter half of the 19th century, with Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 showing a significant gap where this structure now stands, indicating it was built after that date.

The front north-east facade has been considerably modernised. Number 49 displays a timber panelled door to the far right with a plain semicircular arch fanlight and plain moulded surround. To the left of the door is a two-pane PVC window with simulated lattice pattern leaded lights, with a timber restaurant sign above. A large elliptical arch coach doorway sits to the left of this window, fitted with timber sheeted double doors; the rubble dressings of the original coach doorway are still visible with plain narrow moulding around them. The first floor of the entire terrace forms part of Number 49 and contains five two-pane PVC windows, each with a cill course and louvered timber window shutters. Number 49 has a rendered chimney stack to the north-west and a large full-height gabled return to the rear.

Number 51 features a central timber panelled door with a semicircular arched fanlight; the exposed rubble dressings and plain narrow moulded surround remain visible. A small traditional projecting pub sign is positioned above the doorway. Large fixed light acid-etched pub windows flank the door, with the larger window to the right also bearing a timber pub sign above it. Number 51 has a double-pitched roof with a brick chimney stack to the rear section. A large three-level section extends to the rear, with a small single-storey lean-to extension attached.

The entire front facade is finished in pebbledash render with a chamfered plinth and smooth rendered course to the eaves. The rear facade displays a mixture of modern timber windows across the terrace and is finished in roughcast render. The main section of the roof is covered in red clay tiles to the front, with Bangor blues used to the rear. PVC gutters and downspouts are fitted throughout.

The interior layout has been radically altered from its original arrangement. The building has undergone extensive modernisation, including the addition of limestone chip render and PVC windows to the front, and the rear has been greatly extended with the roof now covered in pan tiles.
