Description

This is a relatively plain, rubble-built road bridge carrying the Ballystockart Road over the Gransha River, approximately two miles west of Comber. It likely dates from the mid to later 19th century, possibly between 1840 and 1859. The bridge features a single elliptical arch and concrete coping to the parapets. The date '1889' is inscribed on the coping to the west side, potentially indicating the year of construction or a significant repair and addition of the coping. Evidence suggests the bridge was once covered with a rough render, and some of the voussoirs (the wedge-shaped stones forming the arch) appear to be brick. The road surface is now tarmac.

A bridge is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1858 at this location. While the '1889' marking could suggest the current structure dates from that year, it might also indicate a repair or modification of an earlier bridge around that time. The presence of an elliptical arch, combined with the bridge's lack of a hump, suggests a greater degree of technical sophistication, making its construction probably later than 1833, and more likely within the mid to late 1800s. The bridge is considered to have industrial archaeological interest.
