Description
A small, rubble-built road bridge of probable mid-19th century origin, carrying the Glen Road over the Ballystockart River. The bridge is located at the western end of the Glen Road, approximately 1.5 miles west of Comber town centre, near a sharp bend. The structure is built of random basalt rubble with a single segmental arch, featuring dressed voussoirs. The southern parapet has thick stone coping, while the northern parapet is formed of upright stones cemented in place; the north face appears to have been partly reconstructed recently. The bridge deck is surfaced with tarmac. Stone-built outbuildings are situated to the west of the bridge.
A bridge is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1858, labelled 'Joseph’s Bridge' on both. While the current structure may predate 1833, the absence of a hump-backed profile suggests a slightly later construction, potentially dating to the 1850s. The origin of the bridge's name is currently unknown, and it is uncertain if it refers to its original builder. The bridge holds industrial archaeological interest.
