Description

Eden Cottage is a one and a half storey farmhouse with a half-hipped roof, located on the east side of Ballyalloly Road, just over two miles south-west of Comber, Co. Down. The building dates to approximately 1840–50.

The front south-west façade features a central PVC gabled entrance porch and conservatory. To either side of this are windows with moulded surrounds and PVC frames. Label moulding sits relatively high above both windows. Near the eaves at the centre of the façade is a small attic window with a similar surround. The current owner has a loose date stone inscribed 'Built by John Orr A.D. 1785', which is believed to refer to an earlier dwelling on the site shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map. The upper level window to the front was inserted in the early 1900s by the current owner's grandfather-in-law.

The south-east façade has two asymmetrically positioned windows on the ground floor and two on the upper level, all differing marginally in size. The north-west façade has a ground floor window to the left and a central upper level window. This façade merges with the north-west face of a rear return which has two windows. The south-east face of the return has two closely positioned windows to the left and a PVC door, whilst the gable has a window to the left and an attached lean-to shed to the right. The rear façade of the main house features an unusual octagonal fixed light window at the centre of the upper level.

All façades are finished in rough cast and unpainted 'Tyrolean' render, including the quoins at the front. The main roof is covered in Bangor blue slates, as is the gabled return roof. Two central rendered chimney stacks rise from the main roof, with a tall rendered stack serving the return. The windows throughout are predominantly PVC frames, with a mixture of PVC and cast iron rainwater goods.

The property is shown on the revised Ordnance Survey map of 1858–60 marked as 'Eden Cottage'. Valuation returns of approximately 1863 indicate it was in the possession of David Orr, presumably a descendant of John Orr. The owner believes the cottage may have served at one time as the manse for Moneyreagh Non-subscribing Presbyterian Church and that the roof was raised at some point, though these claims remain unconfirmed. The presence of what appears to be a mid-19th-century staircase suggests the property was either built at its current height or was enlarged early in its lifetime.

Outbuildings stand to the north and east, one of which has been recently converted to a dwelling used as a holiday home.
