Entrance Gates for Portaferry House, Church Street, Portaferry, Co Down

The entrance gates to Portaferry House, dating from approximately 1850, form a decorative yet restrained screen fronting the former Church Street entrance to the demesne. The screen is comprised of tall, square piers built from buff-coloured sandstone. These piers feature a projecting base with chamfered blocks and an entablature with a fluted frieze and ball finial. Central carriage gates and flanking pedestrian gates are constructed from cast iron with a distinctive spearhead railing design, which is repeated on other buildings within Portaferry, including the Presbyterian and Church of Ireland churches. Matching railings extend from the pedestrian gates along a rendered low stone wall.

While the Church Street entrance is marked on a map from 1799, no gates were shown at that time. A layout closely resembling the present screen appears on a town plan from around 1861. The gates were likely erected around 1850, coinciding with the construction of the accompanying gate lodge.

The gate screen contributes to the group value of the remaining demesne buildings. The site lies within the Ballyphilip townland and is located within a conservation area.
