Entrance Gates for Portaferry House, Deerpark Road, Portaferry, Co Down

The gate screen, likely dating from the mid-19th century (1840-1859), fronts the main northeast entrance to Portaferry House. It contributes to the group value of the other listed buildings within the estate. Located on the west side of Deerpark Road, a short distance north of Portaferry in the townland of Ballymurphy, the screen presents a relatively simple design. The wrought iron gates are decorated with crosswork and ball finials, currently painted gold. The central section features uneven coach gates, with a pedestrian gate to the left, all set between low, rendered plinth walls and square piers capped with sandstone ball pinnacles.

Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps from 1834, indicate that the original drive led south, curving west and northwest towards the house. The gate lodge, and potentially the original gates, were then located further along this drive. By 1860, the drive had been reoriented in a southwesterly direction, at which point the present gate screen was likely erected. The gate screen and associated walling are the extent of this listing and hold local historical interest.
