Description
This is a single-storey, gabled block located in the middle of a terrace on the east side of Main Street, Ballymacruise, Millisle. The building, likely of early nineteenth century origin, originally comprised a house (number 51) and a shop (number 53).
Number 51, the house, has undergone significant alterations. The front facade features a partly glazed stable door slightly left of centre, along with a PVC window with a leaded pattern to the left and a similar window to the right. A large, modern window and a recessed glazed door are situated at the rear, alongside a large, flat-roofed single-storey extension with PVC windows and a modern door. The front is finished with lined render and painted “quoins,” while the rear is finished with plain and rough cast render. The pitched roof is covered in pan tiles with PVC rainwater goods.
Number 53, formerly the shop, has been extensively renovated and is now a chip shop. It is taller than number 51 and features a modern shop front with panelled and glazed doors, flanked by two large, eight-pane "bowed" windows. A painted timber sign is positioned above the shop front. The rear of the building has also been greatly extended with a large, flat-roofed extension, and the pitched roof is covered in pan tiles, with two Velux windows to the front and four to the rear. It incorporates PVC rainwater goods. Essentially, number 53 is now a modern building.
The site is shown on Ordnance Survey maps of 1833/4 and 1858-60, and the buildings may have been part of a group of 67 one-storey houses noted in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of approximately 1834. Historical records from the 1830s through the 1860s document the property’s valuation and ownership. The Mulholland family acquired land in the Millisle area in the 1840s, and leases pertaining to the property may be found within the Dunleath Papers. Photographs of Main Street, Millisle, from the early twentieth century provide visual context.
