Description

This is a simple, single-storey vernacular house likely built before 1833, possibly around 1817. It is situated on the west side of Killinchy Road, less than a mile south of Comber, County Down.

The house is a linear design. The front (south) facade features a centrally positioned partly glazed door. To the left of the door is a sash window with horizontal glazing bars, and to the right are two further windows – one a sash window, the other with a modern frame. Evidence of a blocked window and doorway, filled with breeze blocks, is visible on the far left of the facade. The east gable is blank, while the west gable shows a blocked upper-level window, similarly rendered. The rear elevation has a centrally located partly glazed door, flanked by two sash windows to the left and one to the right. A large opening with timber-sheeted double doors is positioned on the far right.

The exterior is mainly rough cast, originally whitewashed, but now dirty with sections of render having fallen away, revealing the underlying basalt rubble construction. The roof is gabled and covered in natural slate, with a small Velux window at the front and one at the rear. A single rendered chimney stack is situated on the eastern ridge. The building has plain bargeboards and PVC rainwater goods. To the rear are gate posts with wrought iron gates, which appear relatively old.

A building is depicted on this site on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1858. According to the current resident, who recalls seeing an incised date on a wall, the house may have been constructed in 1817. Records indicate the property was under rateable value during an initial valuation survey, and due to the loss of accompanying map records for a subsequent 1863 survey, it is unclear who owned the house at that time.
