Bridge over railway, Station Road, Aldergrove, Crumlin, Co Antrim

This is an iron girder bridge dating from 1840 to 1859, built to carry a minor road over a railway line. The bridge shows characteristics of Victorian bridge engineering, though it is not considered particularly unusual. The abutments are constructed of basalt rubble, finished with snecked rubble piers, and are flanked by splayed retaining walls with raking sandstone copings that have tooled edges and humped tops. The flat iron girder bridge is supported on four circular cast iron posts, with iron plate panels forming the parapets. Two wrought iron brackets are fixed to the outer face of each parapet. Inclined approaches lead to the flat carriageway of the bridge. The surrounding setting is a rural area with dense vegetation along the embankments and trees along the roadside. Abandoned iron steps descend to the site of the original railway halt, which has since been replaced by a modern house. The bridge was built to serve the Dublin and Antrim Junction Railway, a branch line of the Great Northern Railway; it first appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1857. The ironwork girder itself may be a later replacement for an original masonry arch. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest.
