2 Fountain Street, Antrim, BT41 4BB

This is an early Victorian building, constructed between 1840 and 1859, originally built as a National School. The building is two storeys high and has three windows on the first floor. It has a modern shop front on the ground floor, with the main entrance facing north. The north elevation is constructed of snecked blackstone rubble to the gabled first floor, and features three rectangular two-light timber casement windows set in white painted block dressings with chamfered reveals. A plaque inscribed ‘Antrim National School 1841’ is located at the apex of the gable. The ground floor has a modern shop front with roller metal shutters covering the window and door. The west elevation has a synthetic slate roof with a modern flush rooflight; the wall is roughcast render and features four modern plate glass windows. The rear elevation has a rendered gable with a dashed finish, and a flat-roofed lower extension of similar walling to the side and rear of the main building. The building is situated on the main street of the town, with a pedestrian lane running along its side elevation. A datestone of 1841 is visible on the building. It is located within a conservation area and is currently used as a shop, formerly operating as a school.
