Description

This is a narrow, one-bay-wide, three-storey terrace building with a basement, located in Ballycastle. The building likely has foundations dating to around the mid-18th century, but has undergone alterations over time, resulting in a lack of distinctive historic features.

The front elevation features a modern timber shop door with glazing and paneling to the right, alongside a shop window with two small upper panes. Pilasters flank the entrance, topped with a timber cornice and fascia bearing the shop name. The first floor has a single, large double-hung sash window with eight panes, its sill level with the fascia's top edge. A three-light casement window is situated at the second floor, positioned beneath the roof gutter. The walls are finished with smooth rendering. The roof is covered in natural slates, with a half-round gutter and a shared cast iron downpipe servicing numbers 11 and 13.

The rear elevation is gabled over two storeys and features smooth rendered walls, PVC downpipes, a glazed and panelled door approached by six concrete steps, and two modern rectangular PVC fixed light windows with top-hung vents on each floor. Beyond a small rear yard stands a long outbuilding with a low monopitch roof of corrugated iron, PVC rainwater goods and a smooth cement-rendered rear wall. The rear boundary is defined by a pair of corrugated iron gates set between rendered piers. The building maintains the established street line.

Buildings in this area are shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1832, suggesting a possible construction timeframe within the mid-1700s, coinciding with the town’s development. An identical block is shown on the 1857 Ordnance Survey map, however distinct buildings are identifiable by 1904, when this building is shown without a rear return. While the original street front and ridge height likely date from the mid-18th century, surviving features such as window style and size probably date from the mid-to-late 19th century. Recent alterations have largely shaped the building's current appearance. The building is situated within a conservation area.
