Description
This is a two-and-a-half storey, two-bay wide building dating from the mid-19th century, probably between 1840 and 1859. It is situated within the Town Parks townland of Ballycastle and observes the established building line of the terrace. The building’s front is dominated by a shopfront dating to the 1990s, designed to appear traditional and restrained. The shopfront spans the width of the façade, featuring a restaurant window with six vertical panes and three semicircular panels above, with the remaining segments also glazed. The recessed entrance door has a large glazed top panel with decorative glass and a smaller glazed flank panel. The shopfront is framed by narrow pilasters and a name fascia with a cornice, with gold leaf painted lettering. The front is painted a matt bottle green. At the first floor level are two windows, with the upper panes being top-hung, and decorative guard rails below the cills for window boxes. A half-round gutter runs along a timber fascia, and there are no eaves. The walls are smooth and rendered, painted, with a projecting sign enhanced by decorative metalwork. The roof is natural slate and includes two small Velux-type rooflights. A concrete barge extends from a chimney stack to the gutter where the roof meets the adjacent building at number 14. A red ridge tile is present. A single downpipe runs down the front of the building, noticeably winding as it descends. The building was previously used as a shop within a terrace and is now a restaurant. The architect for the 1990s renovations was James McCormick. The present owner acquired the property from M/s B Kelly in 1983 and subsequently reslated the building.
