Description
The building is a former schoolroom, possibly originally constructed as a chapel, located to the east of the main building at Chard School. It likely dates from the late 16th century and was extended and converted into a school chapel around 1957, with further alterations and repairs, including restoration in 1961.
Constructed from random limestone rubble, the building features a gabled thatched roof with dressed stone coping at the east gable. It has a rectangular, one-room plan and is a single-storey structure with four bays.
The rebuilt south front includes a doorway with a much-weathered chamfered surround, a plank door, and label moulds above, along with three mid-20th century five-light stone mullioned windows with leaded lights that match earlier windows. To the left of the entrance is a mid-20th century lozenge-shaped window with a raised, chamfered surround, which contains a memorial window dedicated to D B M Hume, a former headmaster. The rear elevation features a similar five-light mullioned window, also a mid-20th century addition, with doorways at either end and a modern flat-roofed extension to the right. The east gable end has stone quoins and a heavily-restored three-light Perpendicular window with a hoodmould above.
Inside, the building consists of a single room with a raised stage at the west end and a barrel-vaulted ceiling.
